The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Clinical Services Program's mission is to perform sequential studies using samples obtained from patients with cancer, AIDS, chronic granulomatous disease or other diseases associated with immunologic dysfunction. The Clinical Support Laboratory (CSL) provides dedicated support to clinical investigators in the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) of NCI. Services include specimen processing and testing in support of clinical trials as well as testing in support of investigator initiated basic research. The laboratory also provides dedicated support to specific programs/projects sponsored by the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, NCI and the Division of Clinical Research, NIAID. The CSL also provides shared service support that is available to other NIH investigators.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The successful candidate will serve both as a Lab Manager & Project Manager in support of the Clinical Support Laboratory. CSL is a service lab that primarily offers experimental support of NCI clinical projects that often involve evaluation of immune system function.
  • Multi-color flow cytometry assay design, performance, and analysis.
  • Propagation (small scale) of human dermal biopsies in sterile culture; transformation of human B cells using Epstein-Barr virus generated in-house; other cell culture procedures as needed.
  • Coordinate and document service, maintenance and QC of instruments. monitor instruments, refrigerators, incubators, etc. for signs that service is needed.
  • Write and update SOPs and maintain documentation (staff training), etc.
  • Frequent communication with investigators regarding CSL performs for investigators.
  • Supervises technical staff at the bachelors degree level, either as direct reports or indirect reports; offers thoughtful insights of current science practices; and helps plan, gives progress updates and data analyses of the work to team members.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of a PhD degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in Immunology, Microbiology, or related biomedical research field or eight (8) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Fo reign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • No experience required beyond the PhD degree.
  • Knowledge of advanced data reporting techniques, mathematics and statistics; Advanced laboratory techniques germane to the specialty area (i.e. sterile procedures, safety procedures, instrument operation, etc.).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • C omfortable doing work performed under regulations of BL-2 and BL-2*(enhanced) safety measures.
  • One ( 1) year or more experience with a PhD degree or two (2) years or more with Masters degree where clinical tests in the area of immunology were performed.
  • Past GMP, GLP quality documentation experience Or work done under the regulations of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA).
  • Experience with planning, performing and analyzing results of flow cytometry assays.
  • Ability to independently develop new assays or production methods.
  • Can serve as technical authority when the lead laboratory scientist is unavailable.
