PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Within Leidos Biomedical Research Inc. (operator of the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research), the Clinical Research Directorate (CRD) provides clinical supervision of programs at the clinical end of the research spectrum. The quality assurance programs provide the required autonomy and transparency of Good Manufacturing Practice quality assurance operations. CRD also provides operational support for clinical research and supports clinical trials management, regulation, pharmacovigilance, and protocol development/protocol navigations. These support services include dedicated clinical research professionals who provide patient care to clinical trial participants at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center, and other research services that support the domestic and international clinical research initiatives of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and several other institutes within NIH. CRD's support services are strategically aligned with its mission to provide comprehensive, dedicated support to assist NIH researchers in providing the highest quality of clinical research in compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines, maintaining data integrity, protecting human subjects, and helping to advance scientific clinical research. CRD facilitates the conduct of NIH-sponsored clinical trials that investigate the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, influenza, HIV, infectious diseases and emerging health challenges like Ebola virus and COVID-19, parasitic infections, heart, lung, and blood disorders, and rare and neglected diseases. CRD's collaborative approach to clinical research support and the expertise and dedication of staff to the continuation and success of CRD's mission has contributed to improving the overall standards of public health on a global scale.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Independently evaluate patients in both inpatient and outpatient clinical research settings.
- Work as a member of a multidisciplinary clinical team to provide comprehensive care to patients in a research environment
- This position will include up to 20x 13-hour shifts and up to 8x 24-hour shifts per year which may occur on weeknights, weekends, or federal holidays. Shifts will begin between 6 and 8:00 AM for 24-hour shifts and between 5 and 6 PM for 12-hour shifts
- All activities shall be performed in coordination with a government attending physician
- Complete in-depth documentation through written progress notes, dictation summaries, and communication with referring physicians according to medical record documentation requirements
- Participate in clinical rounds, team didactic lecture sessions, and conferences
- Administer and adjust trial medication under the guidance of a physician
- Explain discharge instructions and medication regimens to patients, nurses, assigned case manager and incoming on-call resident during sign out, and follow up with consulting service recommendations
- Order, perform and interpret basic laboratory diagnostic/treatment tests and procedures
- Perform comprehensive health care assessments by obtaining health and family medical histories
- Complete physical examinations
- Perform clinical data recording and medical chart entries
- Obtain informed consent
- Maintain and complete medical records
- Place orders and write prescriptions for medications and tests
- Perform retrievals from electronic medical information system
- Distinguish between normal and abnormal findings and determine which findings need further evaluation and/or collaboration assessment, referring unusual problems to attending physicians
- Develop and implement a plan for care, including appropriate patient/family counseling and education based on in-depth knowledge of the specific patient populations and/or protocols
- Evaluate, modify, and revise care plan at appropriate intervals
- Assess acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities
- Assess needs and/or problem areas and plan appropriate therapeutic measures
- Ensure compliance with applicable licensure/certification requirements, healthcare standards, governmental laws and regulations, and policies, procedures, and philosophy in nature
- Demonstrate expertise in related healthcare, individual initiative, and independent judgement.
- Counsel, support, and educate patients and staff on matters relating to health and research studies/protocols, to include emotional support in helping patients cope with stress of illness
- Diagnose and manage common acute or stable chronic health problems, injuries, and illnesses making assessments of acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicities
- Maintain a high level of clinical competence in an area of specialty practice integrating the art and science of both nursing and medicine into practice
- Maintain and enhance clinical practice skills by attending/participating in and conducting staff development and continuing education programs
- Provide medical on-call services on a rotating schedule
- Provide clinical supervision of lower-level clinical staff
- Provide documentation and monitoring/grading of side effects related to a variety of study interventions including drugs and psychological behaviors
- Provide health care maintenance, diagnostic and therapeutic services, education, and counseling within the boundaries of his/her specialty area of education and clinical preparation (pediatrics, adults, urologic, surgical, etc.)
- Review assigned patient resident reports and carry and answer the resident pager/cell phone
- Provide coverage for the post-call resident's patients, while working closely with the Inpatient/Fellowship staff
- Complete NIH Credentialing Process
- This position is located in Bethesda, Maryland
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Possession of a M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
- In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience
- Must hold an active, unrestricted medical license in the United States
- Board certification in Internal Medicine and Allergy and Immunology or Infectious Diseases (other Internal Medicine specialty training will be considered)
- Meet the requirements for credentialing to practice as a staff physician in the NIH Clinical Center
- Prior experience in clinical trials management
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
- Pediatric Oncology experience
