The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Basic Science Program (BSP) pursues independent, multidisciplinary research in basic and applied molecular biology, immunology, retrovirology, cancer biology, and human genetics. Research efforts are an integral part of the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR). Research efforts related to this position will be performed under the scientific direction of Dr. Mary Carrington, Principal Investigator, HLA Immunogenetics Section, Laboratory of Integrative Cancer Immunology, and Director of the Basic Science Program. Her primary research interests focus on the role of host genetics in cancer, autoimmunity and infectious disease pathogenesis.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Scientist I will provide research support in investigating the role of host immunogenetics in disease pathogenesis. The key responsibilities for this position will include:
  • Oversight of scientific and technical aspects for assigned projects
  • Design and testing of cellular assays modeling immune responses in the context of genetic polymorphism
  • Perform a full range of experiments from molecular biology to cell biology including cloning, sequencing, lentivirus production, cell line transduction, flow cytometry, and genotyping
  • Analysis of data, presentation of findings at meetings, and preparation of manuscripts
  • Providing administrative support for the laboratory as a whole

  • BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
    • Possession of a PhD degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or eight (8) years of related experience. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
    • No work experience required with a Doctorate degree
    • Record of first author publications
    • Scientific writing and presentation skills
    • Basic knowledge of statistical analysis
    • Strong knowledge of cellular biology, genetics and immunology
    • Creativity in generating scientific ideas

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Five (5) years of work experience in addition to education requirements
    • High level of competency in molecular and cellular biology techniques
    • Excellent communication, verbally and in writing, in supporting all requirements
    • Strong teamwork skills
    • Deep knowledge of genetics/immunology
